What are the Requirements for an Analytical Essay
For students, writing an analytical essay can be troubling. This is especially true if he or she has never written one. The good news is that analytical essays give the student room to explore a topic, consider the information, and express an opinion based on that information. Given practice, the student will develop a successful approach that meets all the necessary requirements.
In order to produce quality work it is imperative that the student completely understand the topic that they are being asked to analyze. These topics could be anything from a book, movie, or any other socially relevant item. Be sure you take the time to thoroughly research the piece and give it the attention it deserves.
Remember that you are expressing an opinion. This type of essay requires not only an understanding of the material but a valid opinion that is sound and which is based on solid evidence. You are not required to prove the opinion necessarily, but there needs to be enough facts surrounding the essay to provide a believable ground on which to stand.
The sooner you nail down your thesis statement, the sooner you will have a clearer direction on where you are going and how you are going to get there. A thesis statement is one or two sentences that clearly defines your opinion on the topic. Once the student has this they can begin focusing on more important specifics regarding the evidence and why he or she is taking this stand on the information.
Another very important part of all academic writing is properly utilizing citations and references. Pay special attention to where you are getting your information and keep track of it. Research the proper methodology in regards to how your particular school or institution wants this done. This is of the utmost importance so take every precaution.
Pay special attention to your paragraph structure and how you lay them out. You will be required to have an introductory paragraph that contains a proper thesis. Make sure that you pay attention to how ideas are expressed in following paragraphs. Each subsequent paragraph should be clear on its intent and adequately display it in a convincing manner. Be sure to include citations where applicable to back up your opinion. Make each sentence count and avoid using pointless words. A proper analytical essay will also need to be wrapped up with a conclusion paragraph. Be sure to use this final paragraph to put the final stamp on the argument.
