School Violence - A Social Problem

Violence is the use of physical force against another individual with the intention of causing them bodily harm. Although violence was once considered to be a problem most common among the adult community, violence in the school is more common than what we would like to admit. Recent years have endured deaths at the hands of school violence at high schools, colleges, and yes, even elementary schools. School violence includes not only that occurring on the physical location of the school but at other functions pertaining to school activities, too.

School Violence: The Low Down

  1. During the 2009 - 2010 school years there were a total of 17 homicides in US schools involving school-aged children.
  2. Just over 828, 000 student were victimized at school with violence
  3. 7.4% of all students enrolled in public schools report they have been threatened by another student with an act of violence
  4. 5/4% of all students enrolled in a public school admit to carrying a weapon on them during school hours and on school grounds.
  5. 5.9% of all students in public schools admit to staying home from school on one or more occasions due to physical harm or threats from another student.
  6. Any student is at risk for school violence, although students who do poorly in school, experiment with drugs and/or alcohol, and have a history of violence are more likely to be involved with these actions at school.

Getting Involved: How to Help

School violence is a social problem, thus there is something that all individuals can do to help put an end to the violence among out youngsters. Schools are doing their parts, and implementing school police officers and security guards, metal detectors and other programs. Parents can do their part by teaching their children right from wrong, respecting other individuals and how to properly handle their emotions, particularly anger. The community can get involved and make contributions to the programs that schools are initiating to minimize school violence.

Anyone could be the victim of school violence. It is a problem affecting all areas, all gender and all ages. The facts of school violence are alarming, as you can see above, but it is nice to know that there are so many easy things that each person can do to help put an end to the violence being seen in the public schools.
